Hajji Firuz

One of the most important symbols of Nowruz is called Hajji Firuz. He is wearing red cloths, his face is covered in soot and playing a tambourine. He announces the arrival of spring from the beginning of Esfand (the last Iranian month).

Based on the Iranian myths, Hajji Firuz comes from the world of the dead which is associated with cold and darkness, that’s why his face is covered in soot and there is no sign of humiliation or slavery. The red colour of his clothes is the symbol of life. His musical instrument is tambourine. By dancing and playing tambourine, Hajji Firuz requests rain as a necessity of the nature and in fact he follows rituals of ancient world to ask for rain.
